Field work

Away from the studio, the light is not mine to shape.

Documentary frames from Ghana, Japan, and the streets of Halifax. No backdrop, no strobes, no direction. This is the work I make for myself, and it is where the studio work learns to stay honest.

A woman in a coral dress carries a container on her head through a fishing harbour, wooden boats and flags behind her, nets piled in the sun.
Ghana
A man in a red shirt takes a call at a newspaper stand, the day's front pages strung on the wall behind him, a taxi sign blurred in the foreground.
Ghana
In stopped night traffic, a woman in a white headscarf carries a basin of drinks on her head between the lanes, brake lights glowing around her.
Ghana
A red car trails a cloud of orange dust along the shore road as a lone figure walks through the haze, the sea bright beyond the breakwater.
Ghana
A silhouetted man reads his phone as he walks past glowing flower illuminations in blue, purple and yellow.
Japan
A man in a cap leans on a railing beneath a giant Canadian flag reflected in the glass of an office tower.
